FROM SPACE TO YOUR BEDROOM



vlak is revolutionary in more than one aspect. It’s the first lamp that’s made out of Insulated Metal Substrate (IMS), an elegantly thin sandwich of brushed aluminium, isolation, copper and matt black paint.
Until 5 years ago IMS was so damn expensive that it could only be afforded by space agencies. But really, it’s primary function up now, was as a superconductor in spacecrafts.








NO INSIDE, NO OUTSIDE

Why hide the technology when it looks this pretty? The vlak knows no inside or outside: technique and end product are the same thing. The printed circuits, the little wires, the inside of the knob – it’s all out there for your eye to wander and your brain to ponder.













YOUR PERSONAL SUNSET

Raise your hand if you miss the warm glow of the classic incandescent light bulb. LED producers try to match the feeling by adding a red LED to the white LED. vlak uses the same principal but on a whole different level. A smart and unique algorithm distributes the current over 48 LEDs in four selected colours. Product designer Gregor van Egdom used sunlight as his inspiration. The result is unprecedented. The vlak dims like a natural sunset. Dim it again. And again. Romance in the palm of your hands…











HANDMADE IN THE NETHERLANDS



State-of-the-art technology and craft combined. The material and production techniques used to make vlak are high-tech. Computer-controlled machines automatically place all components on the surface of vlak. This highly automated process takes place without human interference.
After that, the circuit board is bent by a craftsman and the last parts are skillfully assembled in The Hague, The Netherlands.

vlak is the brainchild of Gregor van Egdom

Gregor van Egdom (1986) is an independent industrial designer fascinated by the possibilities of electronics. He has worked freelance on projects as diverse as a CO2-capturing system, an integrated fire suppression system and a quirky product that makes sure you won't spend your meetings playing Candy Crush.
He launched vlak as an independent label of lighting products, of which the vlak 1 is the first.
